FACTORS OF
ABNORMALITY AND DISTURBANCE"
audio works
This is a
series of audio works I began in 2005.
The idea
of the project is to create the work using a procedure that
requires the least possible conscious intervention. The phrase "factors
of abnormality and disturbance can become elements of communication" (
from Saussure's "Course in General Linguistics"), describes the
creative process of this work. Human creativity is substituted by
"mechanical errors": errors of translation software and errors of vocal
synthesizers.
The
process of translating a sentence from one language to another
always presents certain difficulties, since a word in one language
doesn't necessarily correspond to a certain word in another language.
In addition, the meaning of a word is case-sensitive, and language is a
reality in a continuous state of evolution. If we introduce a
moderately complex phrase into a software translator, the results are
likely to have an altered, distorted, or completely unintelligible
meaning.
The text
is generated by the translations of Saussure's quote using
different translation programs easily found on the internet. This
sentence was translated into another language, the subsequent
translation was retranslated into a third language... It is possible to
repeat this process endlessly.
The text
containing all the translations is read using software
applications for speech articulation, which one can easily find on the
internet. Expressive qualities, like those of a human reader, are
therefore removed. Each virtual interpreter reads a different language,
generating yet another level of errors and mispronunciation, further
abstracting the already misconstrued, written variations of the initial
quote. I chose not to refine the resulting audio tracks because I would
have arbitrarily eliminated some "factors of disturbance".
Different
variations in terms of, order of languages, number of voices,
appearence and timing of the voices, have been made or will be done
soon. Some variations have been produced using dictionary definitions
of the word: "word" as a beginning sentence, or using the text you are
now reading. Also in some other variations the text is generated using
the same two languages over and over.
Love Drift
Another
variation, using the dictionary definition of the word "love".
poster
For "3500
cm2" I designed a poster also called "Fattori di anormalità e
disturbo". The image was made by taking a picture of the noise from a
television screen. The same idea of overlapping error layers was used.
